How To Define Your Target Market To Find Your Dream Clients

One of the joys of being a small business owner is the fantastic people you work with. You love your clients, and your clients love you, too. After all, when you work together, you naturally form a relationship of trust and friendship. You understand their needs and know how to help them. When you have availability to work with more clients, it’s time to go out there and find them. But how will you know where to find them if you don’t know who they are? The secret to finding your dream clients is to narrow down and define who your target market is.

Who Is Your Target Market?

In your business, you may be able to serve many types of people. When doing your research, you will find that certain criteria stand out the most among your core client base. These are the people that are most suited to your products or services. This is called your “target market” because they are the people that need your services. They are your potential dream clients.

In order to understand who your target market is, you need to understand who they are as people. What are their needs, and what do they want? What are their pain points, and how can you help them? Also, knowing their lifestyle and demographics is essential to understanding your target market. Your products or services may center around a particular age and gender of people. Perhaps their occupation and education play a role. Understanding these things about your target market helps you streamline your services and products to meet their needs and give them the best customer experience.

Researching Your Target Market

The more research you do, the more it will help you to define your target market. It can be helpful if you create a client avatar or profile. You may already have a dream client that you would love to clone. You can use your dream client as inspiration to create your client avatars. The benefit of having a client avatar is personalization when creating your marketing content.

Start creating your client avatar by giving them a name, gender, and age range. It may help to picture a face of what they look like. You can get creative and make a dream client board with photos you cut out of magazines or print out. Then, write their story. Include anything relevant to your business. Some ideas to use when writing their story are:

    • Short description of their personality and life. Do they have a family and children? Are they busy career moms? Do they live a healthy and fit lifestyle? Do they have pets?
    • Their education level and career. Did they attend college? Are they blue-collar workers? Are they successful entrepreneurs?
    • Their hobbies. What do they like to do for fun? Are they artistic? Music lovers?
    • What are they passionate about? Are there any causes that they support? Do they volunteer? Are they philanthropists?
    • Their pain points. What do they struggle with? Have they tried to solve their problems on their own? If so, what did they do, and how did it work or not work for them?
  • How can you solve their problem with your services or products?
  • Benefits they get from working with you or using your products.
  • What is their buying process? What makes them invest money on themselves or their business? What do they like to buy?

Marketing To Your Target Market

Now that you have a very detailed image of who your ideal clients are, ask yourself where do they hang out on social media? You may need to research to find out which social media platform they use most often. Wherever your target market “hangs out” on social media is where you want to focus your social media marketing and engagement.

Create content that appeals to your target market. Personalize your content to the topics you know are of interest to them. Use keywords and hashtags that make your content searchable. SEO is very important for Google’s ranking algorithms if it’s website content you use for marketing. An example would be blogs to promote your website. You want your content to appear in search engines so your dream clients can find you!

Are Your Competitors Reaching Your Target Market?

While you don’t want to copy your competition, looking at their marketing strategy is a good idea. Check their social media accounts and how many followers they have. Do they have a lot of people engaging with their content? What are people saying about their brand in reviews? Conducting a competitor analysis will help you find ways to improve your marketing and ensure your pricing is competitive.
