Building Your Brand: What Makes You And Your Business Unique?

Branding is a marketing term that describes the process where a business makes itself known to the public and differentiates itself from competitors. In other words, your business brand is how your clients will find you, relate to you, and recognize you. It’s what makes you stand out from your competition or businesses that are similar to yours. Building your brand is a creative way to express who you are and what your business is all about. 

Why Building Your Brand Is Essential To Your Success

When you think about business branding, what comes to mind? Can you think of a successful company and what its branding looks like? You can probably picture their logo in your mind, as well as their brand colors. Do they have a slogan? If they have a commercial that airs on television or the radio, you can probably sing their jingle from memory. Naturally, when you need a product or service, you will first think of the company whose logo, slogan, or jingle is etched into your memory. 

The above example applies mainly to larger businesses. So, what can a small business learn from this? You want to build a brand that will stand out and be memorable for your business. Make it unique and a reflection of yourself. Create a logo, brand colors, and mission statement that is unique to your values and who you are as a person. Doing these things will attract potential clients who also align with your values. Your business will become recognizable and searchable. When you keep your branding unique to your authentic self, your business will stand out from similar businesses. Your business is the one they will remember when they need your product or services. 

Define Your Brand Personality

As humans, we are all different and unique. Think about what makes you unique and different from someone else. On the surface, it may be your appearance. When someone is describing you to someone else, they will often describe your appearance, such as your ethnicity, hair color, body size, and height. People may describe you by what they admire about you. They may describe your clothing style, your tendency to wear fashionable jewelry or boldly colored eyeglasses. Similarly to what makes up your personal style and appearance, your brand logo is the face of your business. 

Aside from your outer appearance, what unique qualities make up your personality? What are your values? You may be known as a kind and generous person who gives to your favorite charities and holds fundraisers regularly. People may see you as fun and full of laughter with a great sense of humor. Perhaps people would describe you as intelligent, wise, and an expert in your field of business. How can you make your business align with your personality? Your mission statement is a great place to start when building your brand. 

Create A Unique Mission Statement

A mission statement is simply a powerful blurb (think jingle, not set to music) that describes the essence of your business. Use it to describe the purpose of your business, who your clients are, and what you can do for them. Keep it short and memorable. You can include your mission statement in your branding, such as your website, social media accounts, and correspondence. 

Don’t forget to include your core values in your mission statement.  What are those principles that drive your goals, mission, and vision for your business? These are all part of what makes you a unique individual and a unique business that stands out from the others.
